This is the selection of single branches that need to be removed or shorten, only if a need is clearly established, to reduce their risk of failure. Branches removed should be kept to a minimum to achieve the objective. If selective pruning is affecting the overall stability of the tree then additional pruning should be undertaken to alleviate this problem.
This pruning method is very targeted meaning the trees defected and deceased branches can removed whilst inflicting minimum wounds. Also can increase the life span of the tree, as single branches can be removed that are interfering with objects such as services/buildings.
